Previously, I asked for your reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and listed Substack newsletter posts from the first day of the invasion.

Rather than link to more posts, which may become outdated, I am listing newsletters which have posted about the invasion and whose creators have connections to Ukraine or Russia. For example, they might live in or have expertise in the area.

Many of these newsletters are normally about other subjects, but have turned to the topic of the invasion. Presumably they will continue to post about the war and its effects.

As you can imagine, many Substack newsletters published posts about the first day of the invasion. (I started a discussion thread asking readers for reactions to the invasion.)

I could post either The Breakfast Club or AOC video for “Lisztomania.” But I've decided on the Glasto version:

One, I miss concerts. 😭 (Someday covid will turn into a cold and I'll get a ticket to Coachella or whatever.)

But more important, two, the Glasto masses (to use a word from “Lisztomania”) are us. A Glastonbury crowd is about the size of the Substack publishing community.

That's a lot of people (and newsletters)! To subscribe to all the newsletters and list all the related Twitter accounts are my impossible goals.

Even if I can't read your newsletter, I can see it. If you've got a Twitter account, I can list it. As I add more subscriptions and list more Twitter accounts, I hope more people will find your newsletter too. 😃

I'm getting more subscribers and more views on my posts recently. With a critical mass of subscribers (free or paid), Sub Pub and its community can more truly be a Substack about Substacks (and you and you and you...)!

As explained in recent posts, I'm subscribing to all Substack newsletters (that are free, public, and not apparently abandoned or against Substack's terms).

I promised to let you know anything interesting from this project.

This appears interesting.

It's the Sub Pub profile. The GIF shows some of the account's subscriptions.

This is just the beginning, literally and figuratively.

The GIF shows subscriptions alphabetically through most of “B.” But then there's the rest of the alphabet.1

The list has 400 subscriptions now, which you can see on the profile.

It could eventually have 40,000. 😮

I hope the list will be useful to you as a writer or reader of Substack newsletters.

As far as I know, there's no place now to find all Substack newsletters. This list could serve that purpose.2

It could be the basis for a more useful random button. Or a custom search engine for Substack newsletters.

In short, it should be good for Substack newsletter discoverability.

I’ll share newsletters and posts and provide feedback. But only from time to time. There are (tens of?) thousands of Substack newsletters and even more posts.

As the title says:

I'm Going to Subscribe to Every* Substack Newsletter!

Wait, what's the asterisk?

Okay, you got me. I won't subscribe to literally every Substack newsletter. I'll bypass obvious spam or other violations of Substack's terms (“Download this pirated video!”).1 I can't subscribe to private / invite-only Substacks. I won't use this account to subscribe to paid content.

You just said “this account.” What account?

I won't use my main Substack account to subscribe to every* newsletter. I don't want a thousand newsletter posts in my primary inbox every day. I'll use another email address.

But why subscribe to every newsletter? You're not going to read all the posts and listen to all the podcasts!

Every day or two, l’ll skim the senders and subjects in the inbox. I'll click several that look interesting. (I follow many blogs in my feed reader. I'm used to doing this.)

I imagine I'll learn about many newsletters I wouldn't have found otherwise. Over time, I hope to see at least one post from a majority of active newsletters. I could subscribe to some from my main account. ☺️

If I can cobble together a recipe on IFTTT or Zapier (which I haven't used in a while), maybe I could create a continually updated list of recent Substack newsletter posts.

I think Substack once had a list of the newest posts. Some Substack users have asked for one. I don't know if I could put such a page on the public web without Substack's permission. Maybe I could publish a feed?

If I create a list for my use, I could tell you how to create one too. Perhaps your version wouldn't be for every newsletter, but every newsletter you're interested in.

There are other potential benefits of subscribing to all newsletters. I could use my inbox as a search engine for relevant posts. (Need a post but can't find it on Google? You could ask me! Anything in depth might require paid subscription though…) I could trace the popularity of words or phrases over time. Maybe someday I could help the Internet Archive find newsletters or posts they’re missing – if Substack gave permission, of course…

Other ideas? Something you’d benefit from? Please let me know.

So how long will it take to subscribe to every newsletter?

I don't know, forever? Seriously, it could take a while. And as new newsletters begin, I'd have to find and subscribe to them too.

So every Substack newsletter will get one new subscriber?

To paraphrase Oprah Winfrey, “And you get a subscriber! And you get a subscriber! And…”2

1) The List

The list of Twitter accounts for Substack newsletters and their creators is now at over 1500!

I feel it's easier for a Substacker to be noticed in a timeline of 1500 (or eventually 5000) accounts than in all of Twitter.

People looking for Substacks in this list might follow your account and subscribe to your newsletter, which is even better. 😃

Anyway, I hope the list is helpful. Let me know in a comment or by email if you'd like to be added.

Consider a paid subscription if you want a more specific or different list of newsletters on Substack or in social media.

2) The Randomizer

What if you could click a button and get a random Substack? 🤔

You could visit either a newsletter or a post at random. Regarding posts, you could get a random post or discussion in the past 24 hours, week, month, or ever.

This is just an idea. It might be difficult to implement. Substack might not allow it.

But wouldn't it be cool? Also, egalitarian: you'd be as likely to get an obscure newsletter as a famous newsletter that published on a similar schedule.

Anyway, it's an idea I intend to explore. If the random button isn't something I can do, I might try a Google Programmable Search Engine. (A custom search engine might be even better than a random button for discoverability.)

Your paid subscription would support such projects (*hint hint*). It could also support other projects that you'd like to happen. Let me know if you've got an idea for something I might work on for you.

Twitter and Substack go together like … help me out here. In any event, Substack thinks they go together. Twitter may have other ideas after buying Revue, but still…

Substack asks you to connect or provide your Twitter handle when you sign up. It allows you to find Substackers among the Twitter accounts you follow. Apparently, it even has a behind-the-scenes score based on Twitter activity to determine a promising Substacker.

Many Substack newsletters and creators have Twitter accounts. At least two creators have assembled Substack-related accounts into lists: Substack fiction writers (by Elle Griffin) and Substack Local 2021 (by Gaia Passarelli). The lists allow you to link to the list members’ accounts and see their tweets in a list-specific timeline. And you can pin lists for easier access (on mobile and desktop).

Inspired by these lists, I’ve decided to compile a list of Substacks and Substackers on Twitter. I’ve added 100 Twitter accounts so far. I’ll aim for at least 1000. I believe 5000 is the limit for a Twitter list; I hope to get there soon…

I’m including Twitter accounts associated with Substack newsletters that have published recently – say, in the past two months. (Obviously, that will change over time, so I’ll eventually add Twitter accounts for newly active Substacks and subtract inactive ones.)

I won’t catch ‘em all. New newsletters are launched all the time. Some Substackers don’t indicate that their Twitter accounts are related to their newsletters.

Some Substackers prefer Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. If you’re a paid subscriber, I can track down accounts on those services as well.
