Here’s the thing, good writers are rare. And then good writers who can monetize their writing are even more rare. One skill does not beget the other.

So the numbers SS tout intrigue and dazzle, but how many of those million make more than 20 or 40 dollars a month, say — with a few friends and family members subscribing.

Your point re transparency is the stickler. And it’s why it’s rarely revealed on platforms. The bare bone stats rarely comply with or ‘mirror’ the dream—dream as in ‘the polished image’.

Great post Scott!

Thanks. I'd just like some clarity. Not top 10 stats, or "how I made it and you can too" (though any information can be useful). Not, as you say, selected numbers that "intrigue and dazzle." But rather, how well is this paid subscription thing working for most publishers who offer it? How can it work better?

You asked a lot of great questions. The answers in the data might reveal that growth is only care of a few voices and not the many who show up everyday to release short stories, novels, essays, poetry and much more. I just always believe that because we came first, the money came next.
