Now that Sub Pub has some paid subscribers, I should specify what you can expect from a free or paid subscription.
Notice the blue button? 🙄1
Even if you haven't clicked it before, you probably know it takes you to this newsletter’s Subscribe page. The page allows free or paid subscription.
As noted on Subscribe, Sub Pub's free benefits are:
Public posts and discussions about Substack and its newsletters.
Sub Pub typically publishes a few posts or discussions to the website each week, which are also emailed to subscribers. The content varies – in part due to your feedback – but it's always about Substack and newsletters.2 It could be a list of new Substack newsletters; an interview with a newsletter publisher about their Substack experience; a discussion about getting subscribers; etc. You can find previous posts and discussions in the archive.
I look forward to your comments and email – because, truly, Sub Pub is primarily about you!
Aside from being meta (a Substack newsletter about Substack newsletters3 🤔), Sub Pub is a hub4 for Substack information and interaction. I want to help you have the best experience possible on Substack. I hope that, by reading Sub Pub and participating in the community (in discussions or an interview), you'll learn about other Substack newsletters, and readers will learn about your newsletter!5
A paid subscriber also gets:
Research to find newsletters and publishers sharing your interests (potential subscriptions)
Promoting your newsletter on Sub Pub (and potentially connecting with other publishers for further promotions)
Suggest other benefits! (What will benefit you?)
The research can be tailored to your needs. Are you looking for new newsletters to read? Newsletters whose writers or readers might subscribe to your newsletter? Social media profiles associated with newsletters?6 Something else? If you're a paid subscriber, let me know what you prefer, so that I can send you something useful each month.
I'd be happy to include a short blurb or ad for your newsletter as part of one Sub Pub post every month. I can also mention your sponsorship when I tweet about the post.
If you'd like, I could also provide a “matchmaking” service between newsletters. In other words: facilitation of cross-promotions, collaborations, or other connections. This service could take various forms. You might place an ad seeking collaboration with another newsletter, such as a guest post. I could create a forum for newsletter publishers to ask and respond to requests. Or I could suggest newsletters relevant to you.
For all paid benefits, you can let me know what you'd like. Of course, I can only do so much for each subscriber. But maybe we can figure out something that would be especially beneficial for you.
As Sub Pub grows, it should enable more connections. Your ads or comments to Sub Pub posts and discussions should be seen by more people.
I hope this post gives you a good sense of Sub Pub’s free and paid subscription benefits. You can also opt to subscribe as a founding member, which brings this added (suitably meta) benefit:
Support of Sub Pub and its benefits!
🙂
I know that's an eyeroll emoji. But it's also a look-up-at-the-previous-line emoji.
Sub = Substack (or subscription!)
Pub = Publication (or a friendly hangout 🍻)
If you created a newsletter about Sub Pub, the result might be this:
I’ve noted previously that Sub Pub is a hub. But I refuse to change the name to “Sub Pub Hub.” 😉
When I say “writers” and “readers,” of course I mean to include podcasters and listeners, as well as any other creator/audience relationship that's possible via Substack.
When Sub Pub publishes a list of Substack newsletters, the Sub Pub Twitter account tweets the post and mentions Twitter accounts associated with the listed newsletters. Finding Twitter accounts of Substacks and Substackers is one kind of research I could do for you. I can also find relevant accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and other social networks.
